Fundraiser for Trees of Glory

**TREES OF GLORY FUNDRAISER ALERT**** This message is from Jessica

Jessica contacted the TOG coordinator a while back to get a list of needed items that we could take back to the care point this time. It's really a blank canvas there and I know that they appreciate any donations that they receive, but I wanted to be sure to bring something that would be really useful. One of the items she listed was, "blankets for the chilly nights." Now, you might not think of Africa as being chilly, but it actually gets into the upper 40's and 50's at night during the cooler months.

While that's not super cold, imagine that your home is a grass hut, a makeshift tin structure or if you're really lucky (like the staff and kids at TOG), a block building with cement floors (one of the few structures like this in the area), those temperatures are hard to handle--especially without a blanket.

Aside from the warmth a blanket provides, think of the feeling of security it provides. When I was a little kid, I fell asleep every night with the covers pulled all the way over my head--I was a big chicken (still am--drop me a comment people and tell me I'm not the only one here). It's just more comfortable to be snuggled up under a warm soft blanket.

For most of the kids who are served at Trees of Glory, they don't have the luxury of having their very own blanket.

We want to change that by providing each of the 99 kids currently enrolled at TOG with a nice new blanket to cuddle up with. We want to WRAP THEM IN LOVE.

How cool is this? The same day that Karen wrote me back with the list of needed items, a local friend of mine wrote to me asking how she could get involved with Trees of Glory!!! She doesn't even have a sponsor child at Trees of Glory, but she's heard me talk about it and wants to help this specific community. I just LOVE how God orchestrates these things don't you?

Well, she was going to hand make all 99 blankets, but we discovered it will be much more economical (both money and time wise) to purchase them. We found them for about $4 each. Multiply that by 99 kids, and we need about $400 to complete the WRAP THEM IN LOVE campaign.

I've had these bracelets since Nick's mission trip to Ethiopia back in September. We've been holding on to them waiting for an opportunity to use them to raise money for a TOG project and this is it.

So, here's the deal. We have 20 of these handcrafted authentic Ethiopian bracelets that we'll be sending to the first 20 people who donate to our blanket fund. We'll accept donations in any amount, but in order to receive a bracelet, please make a minimum donation of at least $10.

Jessica added a handy pay pal button to the top left side of  her blog so you can conveniently donate to this project. Be sure to type in your address so that I can ship your bracelets to you. They'll be coming to you priority mail, so you should receive them 2-3 days after your payment has been processed.

She will hopefully be leaving in the next 2-3 weeks, so time is limited. I'm praying for these bracelets to sell out asap. Any money that is raised in excess of the $400 will be applied directly to the clean water well fundraiser, so rest assured that it will get to these kids in one form or another.

Your love will be felt through the simple gifts of warmth and potentially water. So each time I'm able to send one of these bracelets to you, remember that you're sending your love to them.
Please email me at jirvin79@gmail.com with questions and feel free to SPREAD THE WORD.

Poor Jonas

Jonas is sick with hand, foot and mouth virus and he is miserable. I have never encountered this before but he has sores all over his body especially in his mouth and feet. We went to the beach for the Easter weekend which was good as it kept his attention from not feeling good. It's difficult for him to eat but he wants to eat everything... he just can't, it hurts to badly. He will put food in his mouth excited and then starts screaming and spits it out. It's just so sad! You hate to see your little one so helpless.
Our Easter was nice and laid back, even though we had to miss church.  I just couldn't stop thinking how thankful I am for our Savior. The pain he must of endured on that cross for all of us... and for God to have to watched his son suffer... just as we are with our sweet Jonas. It helps me put it into perspective what a gift God has given and sacrificed for us. To know Jesus arose 3 days later with not even a scratch on him is just amazing to see the wonderful power God has. Even though Jonas' first Easter wasn't the best, it's one that will remind us to be thankful for our Lord that has given us eternal life through the biggest sacrifice... his beloved son.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
John 3:16

Yes, Jonas loves Ernie... really ANY Sesame Street character especially Elmo.
This is a golf club headcover that he chose to love on:)
I will post Easter pictures as soon as I find my camera ... it's missing... hopefully not lost???

Daddy & Jonas

This picture of them just brings a smile to my face. Their bond is pretty special as Jonas is just so in love with his daddy! The two of them crack each other up. It melts a mama's heart when these two are doing their funny jokes and tricks. Jonas pulls out that fun kid side out of Scott. Let me tell ya they are two peas in a pod.

Haben's Home!

It was an exciting day yesterday... our neighborhood friends have brought home their precious little Ethiopian boy!
Haben is PERFECT! Lots of family and friends showed up to welcome them home.
It was an exciting moment we had all been waiting for.
It's crazy how God works, almost 3 years ago they had talked to us about their desire to always want to adopt. I remember thinking to myself "that's cool..but not for me." It was really the first time I had ever heard of anyone wanting to adopt... they really planted a seed with me.

Fast forward about a month after we brought Jonas home... They had really seriously been contemplating adoption now so they wanted to meet up for dinner to hear all about our experience. We had an awesome dinner and I think helped answer most of their questions because shortly there after they were on board and ready to move forward. It was so exciting! Through this last year it's been a journey but God had the perfect child made for their family.

Everyone is awaiting his arrival... aren't the matching shirts the cutest:)
Haben's cousin, Brother and Sisters

Welcome home banners!
Everyone felt the excitement as they turned the corner

Hugs for the whole family!!

This is our Ethiopian girls group!

Minus one because Jenny just had a baby and her 3 Ethiopian girls came home on the very same day. Yes, God gave her 4 children in one day, crazy! We have been meeting once a month for dinners to talk adoption ... it's such a blessing to have these girls to share our journeys with... you might remember Emily (on far left) that brought home Elsa three weeks ago (she's standing next to her) and Jessica far right is about to bring home her oldest girl hopefully next month.

Welcome home sweet Haben!

I just can't wait to watch you grow and to see how you and Jonas will share in such a special bond!  You are truly a gift and a blessing! You have made your family's dreams come true. We love you sweet little one!

Before and Now

On Jan. 5, 2010 we got our referral, he was a little over 3 months old and this was the very first picture we saw of our Jonas. He only weighted 9 pounds (3rd percentile) and his head circumference was 40cm which was also in the 3rd percentile. The biggest worry was his height at 48cm .. the medical review clinic said "He was very very below the normal curve" our pediatrician was really worried about his height as it was far from the normal range. We had him remeasured three or four times and it still kept coming up short. Despite what the doctors said we really weren't concerned... this was our child and we were willing to encounter ANY medical issues there may be.
These pictures below were taken by my friend Jessica that went to visit him one week after our referral. You can see his diaper was as big as him.
It's hard to believe he was this small because look at him now ...

At almost 19 months old he's is one healthy and thriving little boy!
We took him to the same pediatrician last week for his 18 month check up. He is weighing in at 23 pounds= 12th percentile,
head circumference 48cm=58th percentile and you ready for this ... Height  33cm= 66th Percentile.
It's amazing what a little TLC and food will do.  He went from not even anywhere near the growth chart to 66% in one year.
He has definitely been doing some growing this past year!

One year ago today ....

It's a perfect fit for embrace the camera to be about our precious Jonas because one year ago today we were hopping on a plane and traveling across the ocean to a country we had never been to get our son. I wrote all about our journey here check it out .. Day 1&2 was in Dubai.

FYI these pictures were taken by a 4year old :)

I remember the nerves and excitement as it was yesterday. It's really hard to even put them into words as it's a feeling I had never really had before.. a lot of it was totally surrendering in the Lord and trusting his plan was the best for us. Leaving the twins was hard, going to a new country was exciting but scary too, but the joy that ran through my blood knowing I was going to get to hold my son for the very 1st time was what out weighted the most. My mind could finally stop racing with the adoption roller coaster ride of emotion and there was peace knowing that the day had finally come to get on that plane..and know we were bringing home such a blessing. It still brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.. little did we realize how much our trip to Ethiopia would change us.

It's pretty funny how God works, as we have friends of ours that live in our neighborhood that today are in Ethiopia picking up their son. We have walked with them throughout their journey and I can't wait for them to bring home their blessing as he is only 7 months older than Jonas. What a miracle to have such great friends going through this journey and for Jonas to have a forever friend from the same birth place! Only God can orchestrate such a beautiful gift! I have been reading about their trip on their blog and boy it brings back so many memories. I can't wait to greet them at the airport.
Stay tuned for more pictures to come to celebrate this weeks remembrance of our son coming home to his forever family one year ago.

Off to work

Today's embrace the camera is of Parker and Daddy.
This morning Daddy decided he was going to take Parker to work with him.
With a backpack full of things to help entertain him,
they are off for a day full of doing golf stuff.
Should  be an adventure.

As Parker was walking out the door he said,"Brooke
and Jonas I promise to bring a treat home for you."... ahh

Jonas' Favorite food

Warning: Sorry for my high pitch annoying voice..
This video is a perfect example of how much Jonas loves pizza, he says he wants it every meal. Also you can tell that he doesn't understand the difference between his yes and no's. Jonas gets frustrated like "enough already and give me some pizza mom!" He's just too cute
